Yes, I AM BEING AFFECTED.
Brief background knowledge:
Dystopia is a futuristic society that has degraded into a repressive and controlled state, usually characterised by a totalitarian or utilitarian government.
Through the past 2 days of Sabbaticals, I have been watching movies that reflect dystopian societies. Some movies of such include Serenity, Minority Report.
Something these films share in common:
It always seems like a perfect world... or at least thats what it is generally perceived to be. However, there will be a significantly huge group who are negatively affected by the state of ruling or living. This group will usually fight against the odds, and in movies(of course) the determination of this group will allow them to rise against such odds and to save the world.
I feel that when we are discussing utopian and dystopian societies, we will find certain overlaps between these 2 supposed 'extremes'.
For example, in a utopian society, we may have extremely low crime rate, but this can only be possible if appropriate measures are undertaken and these may affect people's privacies. This is seen in Minority Report, where the extremely low crime rate is made possible by psychic predictions and public iris scanners.
Instead, I prefer to refer to a utopian society as one of complete impossibility, as I feel that such a society, will disagree with natural human behaviours and will conflict with a dystopian society.
PART II coming up in the speed of.............................................. the snail in my garden.
